Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue

Lawndale Art Center, Houston TX. Curated by Dr. Laura Augusta
February 28 – May 2, 2026

An Essential, Recurring Movement, 2026, Interior latex paint, Site-specific, dimensions variable. With assistance by Sol Diaz-Peña, lan Miles Gerson, and Alexis Pye.

In this site-specific painting, the snake sheds her skin and becomes a river flowing upward into the night sky, joining the stars as a constellation. Situated within the “Constellations” Series, the stars are no longer mere celestial markers, but divine symbols that reflect the principles that orient lived experience. This work presents transformation not just as a rupture, but as an ongoing process that reveals direction.

From Lawndale Art Center:

“Told through a constellation of places and temporal back-and-forths, this traveling exhibit traces stories of the entangled lands of the United States and Central America. ‘Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue’ includes artwork from the U.S. Corn Belt and from Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Texas. ‘Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue’ a traveling exhibition curated by Laura Augusta and produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York and the Stanlee & Gerald Rubin Center for Visual Arts at The University of Texas at El Paso.”

DARIO S. BUCHELI: NOT WITHOUT A COST

Lawndale Art Center, Houston TX
February 27 - May 3, 2025

Dario S. Bucheli presents Not Without a Cost, a site-specific painting in Lawndale’s Grace R. Cavnar Gallery. In his mural work, Bucheli seeks to elicit an embodied experience of symbolic, intuitive, and poetic thought that transcends rationalism. Further, the artist shares that his work reflects “cultural, political, and economic forces that define the contours of [the artist’s] experience living in the United States. The paintings bring together elements of pre-colonial Mexican codices, with references to contemporary American culture and politics. This interpretive process is also characterized by the desire to understand the present moment within the larger context of American history.”
